Overview

The web platform may support different order types and time-in-force values depending on asset class, account permission, market session, and product configuration. Rely on the fields visible in your own order ticket.

Order types

Order type controls how the order is priced or triggered. The order types shown in the order ticket may include:

Order typeGeneral meaning
Market orderSeeks execution at available market prices. Final execution price is not guaranteed. Market orders may be limited to supported market sessions and available platform settings.
Limit orderSets a limit price. Execution is not guaranteed.
Stop orderBecomes active when a stop condition is reached, depending on platform rules.
Stop-limit orderCombines stop activation with a limit price, depending on platform rules.
Trailing stop orderUses a trailing amount or percentage to adjust the stop condition as the market moves, depending on platform rules.
Trailing stop limit orderUses a trailing stop condition with a limit price after activation, depending on platform rules.

Bracket orders and one-cancels-other (OCO) orders are not currently supported.

Time in force

Time in force controls how long the order remains eligible to execute. The time-in-force choices shown in the order ticket may include:

Time in forceGeneral meaning
DayOrder remains eligible during the applicable day session unless filled, canceled, expired, or rejected.
Good Til CanceledOrder remains open until it is filled, canceled, expires, or is rejected, subject to platform and market rules.
Immediate or CancelOrder attempts to execute immediately. Any unfilled portion may cancel immediately.
Fill or KillOrder must execute in full immediately or cancel.
At the OpenOrder is held for the opening auction and, if eligible, executes there. A market order with At the Open selected is commonly called a Market-on-Open (MOO) order. A limit order with At the Open selected is commonly called a Limit-on-Open (LOO) order.
At the CloseOrder is held for the closing auction and, if eligible, executes there. A market order with At the Close selected is commonly called a Market-on-Close (MOC) order. A limit order with At the Close selected is commonly called a Limit-on-Close (LOC) order.

Order type and time-in-force compatibility

Market and limit orders support the widest range of time-in-force choices. Stop-type orders generally support only Day and Good Til Canceled (GTC).

Extended hours: Limit and stop-limit orders can be placed for the pre-market and after-hours sessions. Choose Day as the time in force and turn on Extended Hours. Good Til Canceled (GTC) can't be combined with the extended-hours setting, so GTC orders work during regular market hours only.

Short sales of securities not on the easy-to-borrow (ETB) list: these are day orders only. Day, Immediate or Cancel, Fill or Kill, and At the Close are accepted. Good Til Canceled isn't available for them, and trailing stop, trailing stop limit, and extended-hours stop-limit orders aren't supported. See 📄 Short Selling, ETB, and Locate Requests .

Execution strategy

The order ticket on web and mobile includes a Strategy setting that controls how your order is worked in the market. You can also choose a strategy when you submit orders through the API.

StrategyWhat it does
Smart Order Router (default)Routes your order across trading venues to seek the best available price.
TWAP (time-weighted average price)Works your order in smaller pieces spread evenly over time.
VWAP (volume-weighted average price)Works your order in pieces sized to trading volume, aiming to track the volume-weighted average price.

TWAP and VWAP are available during regular market hours, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, with Day time in force. They can't be combined with Extended Hours.

Options orders

Options orders are limited to the Market and Limit order types, with Day or Good Til Canceled (GTC) time in force. Stop-type orders and the At the Open / At the Close time-in-force values are not available for options.

How to contact Support

Contact Support through a support ticket or live chat if your order ticket shows an order type or time-in-force option not covered here, or behaves differently than described. Include the security and approximate time so Support can check your specific order.

For more information about pre-market and after-hours order entry, see 📄 Placing Orders in Pre-Market and After-Hours (Extended Hours).
